Om asato ma sad gamaya
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya
Mrtyor ma mrtam gamaya
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
Lead us from darkness into light, from the unreal to the real. From the earth to open skies, from death to eternal life, and through it all may we have abiding peace.
OM = Auspicious Mantra of All Existence
Asat = Unreal, untruth, ignorance
Asato = Without truth
Ma = No, Do not
Sat (sad) = Truth, reality
Gamaya = To move or lead
Tamaso = Darkness, ignorance
Jyotir = Light, purity, clarity
Mrityor = Death
Amritam = Freedom from death, nectar, ambrosia
Om = Sacred syllable
Shanti = Peace
This is a prayerful meditation for enlightenment. A request to be led from that which is false to that which is true. It is the statement of desire for wisdom and understanding in body, mind and soul.
